OTTUMWA — Shirley Irene Messerschmitt, 83, of Ottumwa, died at 1:30 a.m. December 3, 2013, at Vista Woods Care Center.
She was born September 22, 1930, in Ottumwa to Elmer and Madeline Anderson Anderson. She married Jack Jordan Messerschmitt on June 16, 1951. He preceded her in death on January 12, 1986.
A 1948 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Shirley had worked at Nash Finch and John Morrell & Co. She and her husband owned and operated Mr. Quick and Messerschmitt Ice.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Ottumwa Women’s Bowling Association, Jaycee-ettes, Missouri Valley Ice Manufacturers Association and was a volunteer for Wapello County Public Health.
She was an avid Bingo and slot machine player.
Surviving are two sons, Jay (Teri) Messerschmitt and Jeff Messerschmitt (Terri), both of Ottumwa; a daughter, Jill Haeckel (Ken) of Gilroy, Calif.; five grandchildren, Jami (Travis) Shepard of North Liberty, Josh (Amanda) Messerschmitt of Omaha, Neb., Jessica Haeckel, Jordan Haeckel, Jacob Haeckel; two great-grandchildren, Colton Shepard and Caitlyn Shepard; a sister-in-law, Mary Anderson of Ottumwa.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Proctor and Betty Gruwell; four brothers, Elmer, Bill, Floyd and Bobbie Anderson; and a son-in-law, Joseph Haeckel.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Ralph Kister officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.
