BLOOMFIELD — William L. “Bill” Thomas Sr., 87, of Bloomfield, died July 31, 2013, at his home.
He was born Feb. 9, 1926, in Wapello County to Carl and Lena Lynch Thomas. He married Phyllis M. Roberts Nov. 1, 1947, in Ottumwa. She preceded him in death Sept. 11, 2006. He was a farmer and worked for John Deere of 30 years, retiring in 1982. Bill was a member of the Dunnville Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and was also a 4-H leader. His hobbies were woodworking, raising cattle and doing genealogical research. Bill and Phyllis traveled to many states doing genealogical work. He enjoyed spending time with his dog, Baby.
He is survived by a son, William (Sharon) Thomas Jr. of Bloomfield; a son-in-law, Steve Bartlett of Bloomfield; four grandchildren, Brian (Vicky) Thomas of Drakesville, Heather (Craig) Huggins of Bloomfield, Raquel (Tim) LaRue of Milton and Jeremy (Kandi) Arnold of Floris; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; brother, Robert (Iola) Thomas of Eldon; sister, Evelyn Everly of Bloomfield; special friend, Cecil Saner of Bloomfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Diana Bartlett; great-granddaughter, Carly Arnold; two brothers, Stuart and Stanley Thomas; and a sister, Alice Thomas.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield; with Pastor Marvin Martin officiating. Burial will be at the Fiedler Cemetery in Wapello County.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. today with the family present to greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Care Initiatives Hospice.
