Joseph Nucko

ALBIA — Joseph “Joe” George Nucko, 92, of Albia, died Aug. 8, 2013, under the care of Monroe County Hospice at Monroe Care Center in Albia.

Joe was born May 9, 1921, to George and Maude (Fry) Nucko in Melrose. He married Marjorie Phillips Feb. 22, 1941, in Unionville, Mo. They were blessed with five children, Pat, Joe, Sharon, Eleanor and Barb.

A graduate of Albia High School, Joe worked at a meat packing plant in Des Moines right after school. He later moved to Albia and retired from John Deere Ottumwa Works after 31 years, while also farming. After retiring Joe and Marjorie spent 22 years wintering in Apache Junction, Ariz.

Joe enjoyed playing golf and cards. In high school, he was known as “Wild Horse Nucko” on the football field and also excelled at track in the high jump and shot put and enjoyed boxing. He was a wonderful, proud man and loved spending time with all his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joe is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marjorie Nucko of Albia; five children, Pat (Joe) Angran of Albia, Joe (Sharon) Nucko of Albia, Sharon (Phil) Boehnke of Garner, Eleanor Hugen of Albia and Barb (Kenny) Lovstuen of Albia; 16 grandchildren, Steve (Cindy), John (Lori), Jim (Liz), Debbie (Jerry), Rhonda, Dave (Kathy), Zane, Jeff, Theresa, Amy (Eric), David (Melanie), Mark (Joleen), Kim, Doug (Christy), Jenny (Jim), Brenda (Tim), and Heather (Dayle); 36 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Murphy and Eleanor Harris; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Frank Hugen; a sister, Mamie; and a brother, Edwin.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Church of the Nazarene in Moravia; with Pastor Terry Chapman officiating. A funeral luncheon will follow services at the church, and burial will be at 2 p.m. in Oakview Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia with Joe’s family present from 6-8 p.m.
