OTTUMWA — Betty Jean Davis, 87, of 2 Oak Ridge Road, formerly of 102 W. Finley Ave., died at 11:50 a.m. October 24, 2013, at The Good Samaritan Society — Ottumwa.
She was born August 22, 1926, in Ottumwa to Vernon R. and Wilda Laura Lester Smith.
A 1944 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Betty had lived in Iowa City, Denver, Colo., and Texas before returning to Ottumwa. She had worked as an operator for Northwestern Bell and Answer Iowa. She worked for KTVO and had been a house mother for the University of Iowa and the University of Denver. Betty had owned and operated a dog sitting business in Denver, Colo.
She was a member of Willard St. United Methodist Church and had served on the board of United Cerebral Palsy.
Surviving are her daughter, Lisa (Duane) Phillippi of Sheridan, Wyo.; four grandchildren, Travis, Joshua Lilley, Jordan and Jennifer Davis; five brothers and sisters, Bob Smith, Bonnie Stufflebeam, Beverly Ware, Butch (Lila) Smith and Brenda (Steve) Leach.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dale Davis; a sister, Barbara Heckart and a brother, Bill Smith.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Cremation will follow the visitation. Private Inurnment will be in Shaul Cemetery.
