OTTUMWA – Terry R. Simmons, 74, of 518 Cresswell Ave., died at 11:49 a.m. October 25, 2013, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
He was born March 18, 1939, in Ottumwa to Edward and Bernice Jones Simmons. He married Phyllis Hatfield on June 20, 1984.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1957, he served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963. He worked 44 years for BNSF Railroad, retiring in 2003.
Terry was a member of the NRA, Izaak Walton League and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis; six children, Kaitlyn (William Martin) O’Riley of Des Moines, Stacey (Mark) Mancuso of Pierre, S.D., Tracy (Peggy) Hatfield of Ottumwa, Kimberly Jo (Alan) Ancell of Ottumwa, Kevin (Christina) Hatfield of Ottumwa and Kari (Matt Hassinen) Hatfield of Sigourney; 11 grandchildren, including his grandson, Jarrod Hatfield, whom he helped raise; seven great-grandchildren; his two dogs, Jazzmine and Roper; and several close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
His body has been cremated.
A time for celebrating his life will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home.
Graveside services and inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Lawn Cemetery with Pastor Marty Schmidt officiating. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Izaak Walton League for trap shooting.
