OTTUMWA — Edward Francis Wilkinson, 80, of Bettendorf, formerly of Ottumwa, died June 20, 2013, in his home after an extended illness.
Edward was born on Nov. 16, 1932, in Ottumwa to Ralph E. and Mary Alma (Lames) Wilkinson. Edward married Margaret Ann McKillip on Nov. 26, 1953, in Ottumwa. Edward graduated from Saint Patrick’s Grade School, Catholic Central High School, both in Ottumwa, and attended Saint Ambrose College in Davenport.
Ed was employed for 30 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works before retiring in 1985. Ed started as a pencil draftsman and retired as a supervisor of engineering services. After retirement, Ed and Margaret moved to the Quad Cities in 1990. While in the Quad Cities, Edward worked for Genesis Systems Group as a CAD draftsman.
Hobbies included playing, coaching and watching all sports. His favorite pastime in retirement was serving as captain of the Iowa Golf Association Course Rating Team. Ed received special pleasure in watching his children and grandchildren in all their various activities. Ed loved his family and was very proud of all of them.
Ed volunteered for many civic, church and school endeavors in Ottumwa and in the Quad Cities. His memberships include Saint John Vianney church and the Iowa Golf Association.
Survived by his wife, Margaret of Bettendorf; children, Mark (Dana) Wilkinson of Bettendorf, Martin (Celeste) Wilkinson of Bettendorf, Ann Wilkinson (Dorene Novotny) of Portland, Ore., and David (Brenee) Wilkinson of Chicago, Ill. His grandchildren are Lyndsey (Kyle) Day, Shaun Wilkinson (Ginna Moreano), Adam, Brad, Wally, Michael and Katie Wilkinson. His great-grandchildren are James and Margaret Day. His sister, Alma Jean Coffin, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive Ed.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert, Ronald, Richard and John David; and grandson, Jared Wilkinson.
Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Saint John Vianney Catholic Church; Fr. Robert McAleer officiating.
Visitation will take place prior to the funeral Mass at 9 a.m. Saturday at Saint John Vianney.
A brunch will take place at Saint John Vianney following the Mass. Keeping with Ed’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.
Recommended memorials can be made to Saint Ambrose University, Genesis Hospice, the University of Iowa Carver Family Center for Macular Degeneration or the University of Iowa Oncology Department.
The family wants to thank Dr. Michael Gimbel and the Genesis Hospice staff for their care of Edward’s physical needs. The family also wants to thank Revs. McAleer, Hynes and Stratman, as well as the prayer community of Saint John Vianney, for their care of Ed’s spiritual needs.
