Elwood Stater

OTTUMWA — Elwood E. Stater, 90, of Ottumwa died June 21, 2013, at Hospice in Ottumwa.

He was born Oct. 5, 1922, in Ottumwa to Emery E. and Christina M. Stater. He married Bette M. George in 1941. She died in 1979. He married Luella Roquet of Ottumwa in 1982.

Elwood attended Ottumwa High School and joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in the First Infantry Division in Central Europe, Middle Eastern and African Campaigns in World War II. Having fought in the “Battle of the Bulge,” he earned three Bronze Battle Medals, Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Elwood was at John Morrell for 33 years. He enjoyed traveling, attending country music shows, gardening, playing cards, especially pitch and various games with his wife, Luella, of 31 years, and all of his many friends. He was well known for being quite the prankster with family, friends and especially his wife. He enjoyed square dancing with the Dudes 'N’ Dolls and the “B” Squares. In 1969, he assisted his son, Jeff, to attend the International Boy Scout Jamboree, and in the 1970s, he was a commissioner of the Middle Iowa Council of Boy Scouts of America.

Surviving are his wife, Luella; daughter, Cheryle Frye (Lance) of Davenport; son, Jeff Stater (Mary) of Ottumwa; son, Todd Stater of Schleswig; a sister, Marcella Davico of Garden Grove, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild in July; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edward, Leonard and Lawrence; and sisters, Leola Belger and Bernice Erzinger.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Davis Street Church; the Rev. James Wakelin officiating. Military graveside services with American Legion and the VFW will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Davis Street Christian Church with the family present.

Memorials may be made to the Davis Street Christian Church or Hospice House of Wapello County. Shrine of Memories is in charge of arrangements.
