OTTUMWA — Martha W. Augspurger, 95, of 1 Pennsylvania Place, died June 24, 2013 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
She was born June 29, 1917 in Bloomfield to William H. and Bessie Hammel Yates. She married Orval E. Augspurger on June 2, 1939. He preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 1983.
Martha grew up in Bloomfield, graduating from Bloomfield High School in 1934. She attended Drake University and graduated with a degree in education.
A resident of Ottumwa most of her life, she taught school in both Davis and Wapello counties, retiring from the Ottumwa school district in 1985.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, P.E.O. Chapter G, Ottumwa Women’s Club, New Century Book Club, Ottumwa Regional Hospital Auxiliary and church choir.
Surviving is her daughter, Mary Beth (Henry) Hammer of Ottumwa; three grandsons, Mike (Robin) Hammer of Stephenson Ranch, Calif., Ron (Cheryl) Hammer of Valencia, Calif., and Charles (Darci) Hammer of Ottumwa; six great-grandchildren, Michael, Luke, Hank, Brooke, Joe and Adam; two sisters-in-law, Ann Kennedy and Phyllis Williams of Lexington, Ky.; a brother-in-law, Charles Augspurger of Lexington, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Doyle Barnett; three brothers-in-law, Lyle, Earl and Glen Augspurger; two sisters-in-law, Hazel McGreevy and LaRue Sloan.
Her body has been cremated.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or Wesley United Methodist Church. Reece Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
