Esther Smith

OTTUMWA — Esther B. Smith, 78, of Ankeny, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 6:39 p.m. June 23, 2014 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

She was born December 3, 1935 in Ottumwa to Evangelos and Olive Horne Zagres. She married Roger F. Smith on September 10, 1955. He preceded her in death on January 1, 1984.

Esther was a graduate of Indian Hills Community College, and worked as an emergency room nurse at St. Joseph Hospital and at Ottumwa Regional Health Center, retiring in 2003.

She had been a resident of Ottumwa until May 2013 when she moved to Ankeny.

Esther was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council #888 Auxiliary.

A violinist she also enjoyed classical music, bowling and traveling.

Surviving are her children, Tom Smith of Des Moines, Helen Smith of Ankeny, Gary (Brenda) Smith of Keomah Village, Wayne Smith of Portland, OR, Greg Smith of Houston, TX, Rita Smith of Little Rock, AR and Lisa Smith of Papillion, NE; 8 grandchildren, Cathy, T.J., Nathan, Christine, Matt, Sharon, Preston and Olivia; 4 great-grandchildren, Lexi, Ani, Abby and Diesel; 3 sisters, Norma Jean Gardner of Durand, WI, Dorothy (Jim) Tortorice of Tomball, TX, Shirley Zagres of Palm Springs, CA; a brother, Paul (Althea) Zagres of Huntington Beach, CA.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Larry; three sisters, Evelyn Zagres, Delores Dreier and Helen Wolff.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Father Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Thursday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
