OTTUMWA — Verla Mary Norton, 90, of 122 E. Manning Ave. died Saturday evening July 5, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Verla was born January 29, 1924 in Ruthven, Iowa, to Carl B. and Anna I. Nelson.
Following graduation from Ruthven High School as valedictorian in 1941, she was Assistant Cashier at Ruthven State Bank for almost 7 years. After she married Andy Norton on June 27, 1948, she became a bookkeeper supervisor at Drake University in Des Moines. Their marriage produced two children prior to their divorce in 1976.
Mrs. Norton was a homemaker during her years in Ottumwa. She enjoyed reading, her home, and her yard. Her artistic talent produced paintings, drawings, and creative art objects for her home.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Ottumwa.
Survivors include one son, Daniel J. Norton of Indianapolis, Indiana; one daughter, Roxana L. Norton of Ottumwa; two brothers, Richard E. Nelson of Oshkosh, Wisconsin and Verling R. Nelson of Lakewood (Denver), Colorado; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a twin sister, Verda M. Goodale, and a brother, Kenneth O. Nelson.
Private graveside services and burial will be held at Ottumwa Cemetery with Rev. Julie Fiske officiating.
