ALBIA — Helen C. O’Brien, 91, of Albia, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2014, at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia.
Helen was born Jan. 23, 1923, in Monroe County to George and Johanna (Feehan) Stone Sr. She married Thomas J. McCarty on Nov. 10, 1943. He preceded her in death in April 1955. She married J. Vincent O’Brien on May 14, 1957. He preceded her in death in April 1996.
Helen was a graduate of Georgetown High School and had served as a magistrate of Monroe County. She had worked at Loeb’s Clothing Store.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia and later a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ottumwa.
Helen is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Lahart of Albia, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Catherine Ryan, Agnes Crall, Mary A. Crall, Joanna Comer, and Margaret Besco; and a brother, George Stone Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia; with Fr. Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Georgetown.
Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia with Helen’s family present from 4-8 p.m. A rosary will be led by St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society at 4 p.m. with a Christian Wake Service beginning at 6 p.m.
Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ottumwa or to St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Georgetown.
