OTTUMWA — Jackie Steele, 79, of 619 W. Finley Ave., died at 1:30 a.m. July 12, 2014, at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born July 22, 1934, in Ottumwa to William and Jenny McDunny Steele. He married Lois Selser on July 9, 1960.
A resident of Ottumwa all of his life, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951-53 and continued to serve in Germany until 1955.
After returning from the service, he worked at Lowenberg Bakery from 1955-1984 and worked at Kelly Reed Antiques from 1993 until the present.
He enjoyed old movies, country music and cooking. He was a wood builder and a “Jack of all trades”.
Surviving are his wife, Lois; three sons, Dennis (Meladee) Steele of Woodward, Iowa, Danny (Lisa) Steele of Anchorage, Alaska, and Joseph Steele of Ottumwa; a daughter, Lois (Kelly) Reed of Ottumwa; seven grandchildren, Maria Steele of Anchorage, Alaska, Megan (Zack) Clemons of Ames, Dakotah, Montana and Cheyenne Reed, all of Ottumwa, Madison and Dylan Steele, both of Woodward.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Loyd Osborn officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ottumwa Area Arts Council for a Freedom Rock to be placed in Ottumwa.
