Gwendolyn E. Milligan, 92, of 2250 W. Main Street died at 2:55 p.m. November 21, 2012 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
She was born June 1, 1920 in Davenport, Iowa. She was the daughter of Walter and Margaret Kelley Heady.
She married Donald E. Swanson on July 1, 1939. He preceded her in death January 5, 1990. She married Leonard H. Milligan on October 11, 1997.
A graduate of Ottumwa Heights in 1938, she worked at Western Union, Walter Heady Insurance and owned & operated Albia Rd. Ceramics for 10 years.
A member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, she was a member & past president of St. Patrick Catholic Daughters of Americas and Altar & Rosary Society. She was PTA president of St. Patrick’s school where she worked and managed the food service.
She was a member of O. B. Nelson Unit #3 of the American Legion, and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliaries. A loyal Democratic Party member, she volunteered working at the polls. She was a member of Circle 8 Square Dance Club.
She was an avid cribbage player, an excellent seamstress and loved to camp.
Surviving are her husband, Leonard; three sons, David (Linda) Swanson of Urbandale, Rex (Jackie) Swanson of Omaha and Kelley (Sara) Swanson of Ottumwa; one daughter, Kristine (Chris) Black of Ottumwa; five step children; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary D. Deeds; a grandson, David A. Swanson and a sister, Louise Stroud.
Funeral mass will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding. Burial will be Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service will be held at 4 p.m. followed by a reciting of the Rosary. The family will be present from 4 to 7 p.m.
