---- — OTTUMWA — Madeline McDowell, 95, of Greeley, formerly of Ottumwa, passed away at Grace Pointe on July 14, 2013.

She was born March 13, 1918, to Earl and Flossie (Strang) Hem in Davis County. She married Edwin J. McDowell in Ottumwa in 1938. He passed away in 1982.

She graduated from Selma High School in Davis County in 1936. She attended Davis Street Christian Church in Ottumwa.

Madeline was a homemaker for a number of years and worked at Ottumwa Hospital and Indian Hills Community College. She and Edwin later went on to own and operate their own antique shop for 25 years.

Her passion was her antique shop. She enjoyed traveling to Lake of the Ozarks with Edwin. In 1989, she made a very special friend in Alvie Roberts, and they loved to travel and especially enjoyed Branson, Mo. He passed away in 2002. She also loved spending time with Buddy and Walker, her "granddogs."

She is survived by her son, Doug (Cindy) McDowell of Evans, Colo.; grandchildren, Scott (Jenny) McDowell and their children, Casey and Emily of Lakeville, Minn.; Heather (Jason) Spelic and their children, Adam and Nora, Cincinnati, Ohio; Sarah McDowell (Mario Flores) and their son, Edwin of Athens, Ohio; stepgrandchildren, Jeremy (Laci) Jacks and their children, Nathan Held-Jacks, Jaylin Jacks and Kaylea Jacks, all of Greeley; Donald Jacks and Joshua Jacks, both of Evans, Colo; nieces, Lura Carr and Sherrill Helm, both of Ottumwa; and nephew, Earl Clifford Hem of San Diego, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Edwina McDowell; siblings, Merle Porter, Obert Hem and Gloria Hem; and a number of good friends.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 1 at the Allnutt Macy Chapel. Inurnment will be held in Mount Gilead Cemetery in Davis County in October.
