Helen Ross, 97, Batavia

BATAVIA — Helen “Maxine” Ross, 97, of Batavia, passed away at 5:15 p.m. March 18, 2013, at the home of her daughter, Kathy, in St. Cloud, Minn.

Helen Maxine Ross was born on July 26, 1915, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Howard and Hazel Hyde Shaffer. On May 6, 1945, she married Donald Maxwell Ross in Fairfield. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1997.

She was educated in a country school in Brighton, graduating in 1932.

Maxine was a devoted mother and grandmother, spending most of her years caring for her family and home. Upon her graduation from high school, she taught in a one-room country school for three years. She also worked in various restaurants as a waitress and at John Morrell for four years. She was later a co-owner and operator of the Batavia Drive Inn. She enjoyed visiting with people and feeding them a meal. She liked to collect recipes and newspaper clippings to share with her family and neighbors. She enjoyed many years of riding three wheelers with her husband and family. In her last years, she enjoyed reading her Cappers magazine and keeping up with the news back home through the Courier. She had a love for animals and especially loved to hold and pet the family dog, Chula. She cherished the presence of family, friends and the volunteers who assisted her.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet (Walter) Martin of Moline, Ill. and Kathy (Randy) Teeter of St. Cloud, Minn.; three sons, Larry (Margaret) Ross of Alamogordo, N.M., Michael (Connie) Ross and Barry (Gennie Crawford) Ross, both of Batavia; two stepsons, Robert (Kathy Otts) Ross of Moline, Ill., and William (Margaret Ross) of Anacortes, Wash.; and one stepdaughter, Margaret Ann Work of Harrison, Ark.; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Wanda Brinton of Hills.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter-in-law, one nephew and one stepgrandchild.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church in Batavia; with Tom Shipley officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Grace Funeral Care in Batavia.

A memorial fund is being established for the Pregnancy Resource Center in St. Cloud, Minn., Great River Faith in Action in Becker, Minn., or St. Cloud Hospital Hospice in St. Cloud, Minn.
