James G. “Jim” Emry, 85, of 441 S. Ferry St. died at 4:10 a.m. March 31, 2013 at Hospice House.
He was born March 5, 1928 near Martinsburg, Iowa to Sterling A. and Margaret Morrow Emry. He married Lucille Campbell on November 20, 1949 at the Martinsburg United Methodist Church.
He was a graduate of Martinsburg High School in 1946, where he was active in all sports. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 of the American Legion.
Jim was employed at the Lowenberg Bakery from 1949 to 1974 as a salesman and sales supervisor. He also worked for the Ottumwa Community Schools in maintenance for 16 years.
He was a member of Willard St. United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for 30 years. He was a charter member of the Wapello Chief Barbershop Chorus singing with them for 30 years and sang bass in the Solid Sound Quartet for 20 years.
Jim loved all sports and was the public announcer for OHS girls softball for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille; three daughters, Claudette (Greg) Dorrell of Fairfield, Patricia (Ed) Phillips of Charlotte, NC and Jane Emry (Darryl) Becker of Urbandale; three grandchildren, Kate, Claudia & Christopher and three great grandchildren, Cael, Maddie & Emry.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Emry.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Willard St. United Methodist Church with Rev. Leila Disburg officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery near Martinsburg. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 of the American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
