Marie Pierce, 91, of Ottumwa, passed away March 29, 2013, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center of natural causes.
She was the daughter of Charles and Gertrude Burnstedt. She married Bob Pierce with three children born to their union, Janice Pierce, and Elna Bradley and Chuck (Jeanna) Pierce, both of Ottumwa.
Marie was a lifelong resident of Wapello County. Marie graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1939 and from Ottumwa Heights College in 1941. She taught elementary school at Chillicothe and Irving Elementary School in Ottumwa. Marie loved playing the piano, was a church organist at Munterville Church and accompanied numerous dance bands in the Ottumwa area.
She has three grandchildren, Travis Watkins of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Amanda Porbeck of Jonesboro, Ark., and Stephanie Pierce of Ottumwa; two stepgrandchildren, Anthony Meisner of Arvada, Colo., and Keegan O’Brien of Ft. Collins, Colo.; one great-grandson, John Robert Porbeck of Jonesboro, Ark.; and her special friend and caretaker, Mary Guyette.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter, Janice; brothers, Oliver and George Burnstedt; and sister, Dorothy Lockridge.
Her body has been cremated.
A family and friends luncheon will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at 112 Bryan Road in Ottumwa. Bring a special memory to share about Marie.
