---- — SELMA — Emett Leroy Liles, 87, of rural Selma, died at 11:49 a.m. May 20, 2013, at Veterans Hospital, Iowa City.

He was born June 20, 1925, in rural Floris to Charles and Caroline Hewitt Liles and married Irene DeVore on July 6, 1946, in his family’s home. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II, where he was wounded in action for which he was awarded the Purple Heart medal. He and Irene purchased their home in rural Selma where they raised their six children. He worked construction many years until he started harness racing, winning many awards including being inducted into the Iowa Harness Racing Hall of Fame. He was a member of Eldon Assembly of God for more than 40 years and loved God, family, racing, hunting and telling stories.

Surviving are his wife, Irene; two sons, Tim (Lynne) of Muscatine and Randy of Packwood; three daughters, Mary Szeliga of Eldon, Ginger Chatfield (Daniel) of Muscatine and Teresa Poush (Scott) of Mountain Home, Ark.; 12 grandchildren, Mark Sprouse (Anna), Mike Sprouse, Ben Sprouse (Lisa), Jon Liles (Mindi), Tyler Poush (Allison), Blake Poush, Alan Chatfield, Dylan Poush, Marcia Thornton (Bobby), Christy Liles (Jason), Britney Poush and Andrea Chatfield; six great-grandchildren, Gunner Thornton, Jack and Katlin Sprouse and Liam, Tori and Taylor Liles; two brothers, Gene of Eldon and Paul (Evelyn) of Batavia; and two sisters, Naomi Lathrop of Eldon and Pauline Lind of Little Rock, Ark.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Ricky; seven brothers, Albert, Dwight, Frank, Pardon, Everett, Bill and David Liles; a daughter-in-law, Linda Liles; and four sisters, Sarah Talbott, Mary Liles, Rachel Greene and Ruth Boliou.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Eldon Assembly of God Church; Pastor John Cooper officiating. Burial with military honors by John Hyson Reneker Post, American Legion, Douds, will be in Iowaville Cemetery, rural Selma.

Visitation with family present will be 5-7 p.m. today at the church.

Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family may be left at the church or mailed in care of the church at P.O. Box 369, Eldon, Iowa 52554.
