OTTUMWA – Marie A. Johnson, 88, of 1574 N. Van Buren Ave. passed away July 12, 2013 at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia.
Marie was born September 12, 1924 in Cedar Township to John Francis and Mary Malloy Beary. She graduated from Lovilia High School in 1942. She was united in marriage to Walter F. Johnson on June 29, 1952 at St. Mary’s Church in Weller, IA. He preceded her in death on August 17, 2008. They had one son, Barry L. Johnson.
Marie was a resident of Ottumwa most of her life. After World War II she worked at the law firm of Jones and White. She later worked many years with her husband, Walter, at his law firm.
Marie was a long-time parishioner at St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was an avid gardener and a voracious reader. She also enjoyed sports, both as a participant, and a spectator. She played basketball in high school, and was a bowler and golfer for many years. She was a long-time fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Surviving is a son, Barry (Melissa) Johnson of Oklahoma City, OK; a granddaughter, Eleanor; a grandson, Clifton, brother-in-law, Vincent (Nadine) Johnson, sisters-in-law, Dorothy Beary, Kate Beary and Lois Beary; and by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Cyril, Paul, John, Donald and Richard Beary, a sister-in-law, Dot Beary and a niece, Jeanne Church.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Visitation with Rev. Bernie Weir presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
