BLAKESBURG — Thomas G. “Tom” Tully, 73, of 20327 15th St., died at 12:45 p.m. July 17, 2013, at the VA Central Iowa Healthcare System in Des Moines.
He was born September 3, 1939, in Ottumwa to Richard “Dick” and Lenore “Toots” Beach Tully. He married Carolyn R. Jones on December 23, 1967 in Lancaster, Mo.
A 1958 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Tom attended Northeast Missouri College in Kirksville. Tom was a U.S. Army veteran having served from 1961 to 1964 in Germany.
He had worked at John Morrell & Co., Chamberlain Mfg. in Albia and worked security at Cargill Meat Solutions, retiring in 2011.
Tom was a life member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of Ottumwa Saddle Club. He enjoyed living on a farm, watching his grandchildren, camping and his dog, Heidi. Tom enjoyed attending horse shows with the Ottumwa Saddle Club, especially the Fort Madison Trail Ride.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn; four children, Tammy (Carl) Clymer of Blakesburg, Jeff (Nancy) Helmick of Elwood, KS, Chris (Russ) Johnson of Unionville, IA and Dixie (Tommy) Canny of Salt Lake City, UT; seven grandchildren, Garrett Clymer, Laney Clymer, Jeffrey (Ashlee) Helmick Jr., John Helmick, Guy Johnson, Melodie (Bob) Trowbridge and Laurie (Travis) Skinner; two great-grandchildren, Haylie Trowbridge and Katie Skinner; a brother, Jim (Linda) Tully of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Carolyn (Max) Schlarbaum of Mesa, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Kimberly Tully; two brothers, Larry and David Tully.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Cary officiating. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ottumwa Saddle Club, Hopewell Church or to the family.
