BUSSEY — Paul Joseph Stilwell, 90, of Bussey, passed away Wednesday morning, July 17, 2013, at the Pella Regional Health Center Emergency Room in Pella.
Paul was born in Hamilton on Oct. 26, 1922, the son of Joseph and Minnie (Scott) Stilwell. Paul was raised in the Hamilton area and graduated from Bussey High School.
As a young man Paul helped farm, working with cattle and row crops, and briefly worked in the coal mines in Lovilia. Paul worked for 25 years with the John Morrell Company in Ottumwa and then for several years with the State D.O.T. Paul also farmed south of Ottumwa from 1967-83, when he moved to Bussey.
On Oct. 26, 1941, Paul was united in marriage to Helen Wanda Hooten in Lancaster, Mo. Paul and Wanda were blessed with almost 50 years of marriage and one daughter, Becky. Wanda passed away in August 1991.
Paul enjoyed collecting and working on antique clocks, woodworking and going on bus trips with his wife and friends. He also had attended the Finley Avenue Baptist Church, and while living in Bussey, he attended the Union Liberty Church. Paul was also a member of the Bussey Masonic Lodge.
Paul is survived by his daughter, Becky Stilwell (Charles Force) of Bussey; one granddaughter, Tierra (Chad) Cowman of Bussey; and three great-grandchildren, Austin, Shelby and Keanu. Paul is also survived by many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Minnie Stilwell; his wife, Helen Wanda Stilwell; and several half brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Union Liberty Church of rural Bussey; with Pastor Homer McBeth and Marty Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery of Bussey.
Visitation will be held from 2-7:30 p.m. today at the Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville with Paul’s family present from 6-7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established to the Union Liberty Church or the Pella Regional Health Center Dialysis Unit.
