Robert Huffman, 89, Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD — Robert Eugene “Bob” Huffman, 89, of Bloomfield, died Dec. 23, 2012, at the Bloomfield Care Center. 

He was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Davis County to Glenn William and Edith Lorene Hockersmith Huffman. He married Mae Campbell July 22, 1945, in Bloomfield. 

Bob graduated from Bloomfield High School, attended junior college in Bloomfield for two years and then enrolled in an aeronautical course at Iowa State University. In February 1944 he entered in the Army Air Force, taking his basic training at Keesler Field, Miss. 

He then completed his preliminary cadet training at Michigan State College in Lansing, graduating June 30, 1944. At the time of his marriage, he was stationed at Hobbs Air Force Base in Hobbs, N.M.

After his service years, he completed college at Iowa State. He owned and operated the Hawkeye Hardware Store in Bloomfield for several years before moving to Greeley, Colo., in 1963, where he was a building contractor. He was certified in all five certification tests given by the International Conference of Building Officials. He was acting director of the Weld Building Inspection Department in Greeley. After his retirement, they lived in Denver, Colo., and Bloomfield.

Bob also held a commercial, multi-engine pilot license and had several thousand hours of flying time to his credit.

He is survived by his wife, Mae Huffman; two sisters-in-law, Sandra Christy and Alice Huffman; several nieces and nephews; and Helen Ernst, a close friend of Bob and Mae for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Dorothy Huffman in infancy and Joan Huggins; and three brothers, William Arthur, Harold Glendean and Richard Wayne Huffman.

Graveside services with military rites performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield will be 2 p.m. Friday at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield; with Rev. Richard Friend officiating. 

No visitation is planned.
