OTTUMWA — G. Russell Benson, 99, of #1 Pennsylvania Place, died at 8:32 a.m. April 20, 2014, at home.
He was born January 21, 1915, near Munterville, the only child of Pauline and Fred Benson. He married Dorothy M. Stodghill on July 28, 1949. She preceded him in death on February 17, 2010.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School, Russell started working for J.W. Edgerly Wholesale Druggist in 1938. In February 1941, Russell was inducted into the Army Medical Corps and served 4 1/2 years, most of the time in Czechoslovakia.
After his military service he returned to Ottumwa where he was again employed at J.W. Edgerly as a pharmaceutical buyer and worked there until retiring in 1978.
Russell and his wife were active members of the First Lutheran Church for many years.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Julie Fisk officiating. Burial will be in the Ottumwa Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
