Lydia Payne

BLOOMFIELD — Lydia Jean Payne, 80, of Pulaski, died April 22, 2014, at Good Samaritan Society in Keosauqua.

She was born April 23, 1933, in Kossuth County to Nathan Alfred and Esther Ruth Kropf Banwart. She married Donald William Payne Oct. 3, 1954, in West Bend. He preceded her in death April 27, 2013. Lydia Jean worked with her husband on the farm and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Pulaski Mennonite Church, taught Sunday School and was active in the Mary Martha Circle for many years. She was also active in the Tri-R neighborhood Club, Cowbelle Association, Red Hat Ladies and was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader. Lydia Jean was very active in SOOP, spending 17 winters in Tucson, Ariz., volunteering in the elementary school system, working in soup kitchens and gleaning in the orchards.

She is survived by her two daughters, Debra (Roger) Knapp of Bloomfield, Donnita Payne Hostetler of West Des Moines; son, Daniel (Crystal) Payne of Pulaski; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Floyd Banwart; two sisters, Lucille (Dwaine) Schmidt, Joyce Banwart; brother, Joel (Sonia) Banwart; two brothers-in-law, Peter Weber, Kenny Schmidgall; and sister-in-law, Lois Banwart.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Dwayne David Payne; son-in-law, Marvin Hostetler; brother, Glenn Banwart; and five sisters, Florence Banwart, Gladys Koehl, Doris Banwart, Mary Jo Schmidgall, Mabel Weber; sister-in-law, Clara Banwart; and brother-in-law, Ernest Koehl.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Pulaski Mennonite Church in Pulaski; Pastor Darrell Zook officiating. Burial will be at the Pulaski Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with the family present to greet friends from 6-8 p.m.

A memorial has been established to the Pulaski Mennonite Church Building Fund.
