OTTUMWA — William Jack “Bill” Applegate, 88, of 7627 Cliffland Road, died at 6:58 a.m. April 24, 2014, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
He was born November 13, 1925, in Mercer, Mo., to James Joy and Ethel Thompson Applegate. He married Goldie Maxine Box on August 19, 1946.
Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1944 to 1946. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1946 when he returned from his military service.
Bill worked in auto body for Bolt Chevrolet in Fairfield for 10 years, also worked for Fagen Norris Chrysler and Traxler Body Shop. Bill was a mechanic for 10 years for the city of Ottumwa, and after retiring from the city, he returned to having his own body shop, working on cars and lawn mowers. He always enjoyed working on cars, especially antique cars.
Bill had been a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Goldie; twin daughters, Brenda Ellen (Bob) Kimmel of Ottumwa and Brenna Elaine (Greg) Roth of Rapid City, S.D.; two sons, Gary Wayne (Debra) Applegate of Ottumwa and Larry William Applegate at home; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a son, Terry Applegate; a great-grandson, Miles; two brothers, Owen Eugene “Gene” and Winston Dale Applegate; three sisters, Mary Dockstater, Ella Six and infant Mildred Applegate.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Ward officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
