OTTUMWA — George Herbert Utterback, 84, passed away April 24, 2014, at home.
He was born Jan. 7, 1930, to Herbert and Helen Opal (Bartley) Utterback. After graduation in 1948, he joined the U.S. Air Force for four years.
He loved flying and has had his pilot’s license since 1964. He rebuilt antique airplanes at the Antique Airfield Association in Blakesburg from 1971-78. He retired from the Ottumwa School System and then drove for Vaughn Automotive for seven years.
He was married to his best friend, Betty Joan Merrill, for 62 years and had three children: Kathy (Ray) Carr, Chris and Erik (Cathy) Utterback. He has two grandchildren, Michael Carr in Ottumwa and Erin (Jason) Carr-McFarland in North Carolina. He is survived by his sister, Janice Gray of Washington state; nephew, Mike (Deb) Gray of Oregon; and niece, Martha (Ed) Gray-Lintott of Washington state.
There will be no services, and he has been cremated.
