OTTUMWA — W. Laverne McDanel, 83, of 412 N. Graves St., died May 6, 2014, at his home.
He was born April 21, 1931 in Moravia to Lyndon Luse and Celia Jane Broshar McDanel.
A 1948 graduate of Moravia High School, he had worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. Laverne was a driver for Norris Construction for more than 30 years.
He was a member of B.P.O. Eagles Aerie #114 and an honorary member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Weirbach; his children, Brenda (Bill) Potts of Mooresville, Ind., Rodney (Tracie) McDanel of Greenfield, Ind., Faith Lewis of Colorado Springs, Colo., Freida (Michael) Phillips of Indianapolis, Ind., Michael (Debbie) Summers of Albia, Viva Jane Logsdon of Cincinnati, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lelah (Johnny) Marlin of Albia; a brother, Wendell (Pat) McDanel of Ottumwa; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn McDanel of Centerville and Patricia McDanel of Moravia.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ronald and Clell McDanel.
His body has been cremated. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Don Kirschner officiating. Inurnment will be in Shaul Cemetery.
