Dorothy Gibbs

OTTUMWA — Dorothy Julia Fulton Gibbs, 97, of Dubuque, formerly of Ottumwa, passed away at 8:15 p.m. June 3, 2014, at the Manor Care Health Services in Dubuque.

Dorothy was born on June 21, 1916, in Bladen, Neb., the daughter of Franklin P. and H. Ethel Hogate Fulton. After her father’s death, Dorothy, her mother and her sister Gertrude moved to Fairfield, Iowa, where she graduated from Fairfield High School in 1935. Following graduation, she taught in a one-room school for a year, followed by Fairfield Glove Co.

She married Linus P. Gibbs at Lancaster Methodist Church in Lancaster, Mo., in 1939 and they lived in Ottumwa, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1994.

Dorothy worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co. for many years and later was employed by Sherwin-Williams Co. for 17 years, retiring as a decorator in 1978. She was an active member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Ottumwa, serving as past president of Women’s Fellowship and a church deaconess. She was also a member of Ottumwa Women’s Club and the AARP.

In 2006, Dorothy moved to Dubuque to be near her family. She resided at Dubuque Retirement Community before moving to Manor Care in 2009.

Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a fantastic cook who was always generous with her time and love. She doted on her grandchildren and deeply mourned the passing of her granddaughter, Kami Lawson. Although dementia robbed her of many memories, she never forgot her family members.

Surviving are her daughter, Carole (Rocky) Reed of Osage Beach, Mo.; granddaughter, Jody Lawson (Mark) Kremer of Peosta, Iowa; her namesake great-granddaughter, Julia Kremer, whom she adored; stepgrandchildren, Teresa Reed of Dubuque, Tricia (Ted) McGinn; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Erin and Colin McGinn of Palatine, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Gertrude Hickenbottom and granddaughter, Kami Lawson at age 6.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Bill Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice or Hospice of Dubuque.
