OTTUMWA — Mary Elizabeth Hunt VanDerHorst, 83, formerly of Ottumwa and Sioux Falls, S.D., passed away June 4, 2014, at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
She was born July 2, 1930, in Ottumwa to Harvie and Mae Dimmitt Hunt. She married William W. “Bill” VanDerHorst on June 8, 1949. He preceded her in death on March 26, 2001.
Mary had been employed at Standard Kollsman and Sunnyslope Care Center while living in Ottumwa. She enjoyed knitting and spending time with her family.
Surviving are two sons, Roger (Sue) VanDerHorst of North Liberty, Stan (Jody) VanDerHorst of Hedrick; daughter-in-law, Fern VanDerHorst of Sedalia, Mo.; mother-in-law, Helen VanDerHorst of Ottumwa; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Violet Colgrove of Visalia, Calif., Dorothy Johnson of Medford, Ore., Shirley Morrow of Deadwood, S.D., and Martha Santee of Perry.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dennis VanDerHorst; a sister, Esther Clark; four brothers, Charles, Archie, Paul and Harold Hunt.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Farson Baptist Church with Pastor Jerry Newman officiating. Burial will be in Competine Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.
