Verna Knedler, 104, Farmington

FARMINGTON — Verna Elizabeth Knedler, 104, of Farmington, passed away at 8:15 p.m. Dec. 16, 2012, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa.

Born March 23, 1908, in Lee County, the daughter of Jasper R. and Mary E. (Anders) Smith. On Dec. 11, 1948, she married Wm. Paul Knedler in Sidney. He preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 1977.

Verna was a member of the Farmington Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Chapter O, PEO, a member of the Eastern Star and the Methodist Women. She had worked for Riders Furniture and Riders Nursery and Floral, both of Farmington. She served on the Farmington Public Library Board for 20 years. Verna was also a homemaker, and she loved flowers and nature’s beauty. She enjoyed caring and cooking for her family and playing cards, especially Bridge with her friends.

Survivors include one son, Jon (Donna) Knedler of Wesco, Texas; one daughter, Janey (Frank) Huston of Ottumwa; four grandchildren, Julie Shaffer, Lisa Farrell, Nick Knedler and Sean Bitner; and three great-grandchildren, Grant Shaffer, Megan Shaffer and Nicole Bitner.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wm. Paul; son, Richard (Dick) Knedler; one grandson, Jeremy Bitner; four sisters, Lula Pickard, Leota Overton, Minnie Smith and Delpha Umphrey; and two brothers, Archie Smith and Lawrence Smith.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Farmington Methodist Church in Farmington; with Pastor Goldie Laymon and Pastor Jackie Thompson officiating. Burial will be at the Sharon Presbyterian Church Cemetery in rural Farmington.

Friends may call one hour prior to the time of service Friday.
