OTTUMWA — John H. Baker, 81, of 700 W. Alta Vista Ave., died at 8:20 p.m. on April 21, 2013, at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born Oct. 14, 1931, in Ottumwa to Clinton C. and Evelyn R. Rieve Baker. He married Louise Bogle; they later divorced. He married Lelah M. Bain on Dec. 31, 2001.
John was a 1948 graduate of Albia High School. He worked for John Morrell & Co. and was an over-the-road truck driver for Bruce, Hite and Eastlick Trucking firms.
John was a member of the Dunnville Baptist Church.
He was an avid race car driver and a fan. He was inducted into the Knoxville Raceway Hall of Fame in 1988. He enjoyed watching and feeding birds, wildlife and flowers.
Surviving is his wife, Lelah; three sons, Robert J. (Roberta) Baker of Grand Junction, Colo., Richard L. (Candie Dickel) Baker of Ottumwa, Randal C. (Clella) Baker of Richland; a daughter, Debra L. Baker Shaull of Hedrick; two stepdaughters, Linda (Donnie) Hubbartt of Keosauqua and Phillis (Don) Dahl of Ottumwa; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clinton C. (Doris) Baker Jr. of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Mary Lou (Don) MacAllister of Hayesville, N.C., and Shirley (John) Little of Red Oak, Texas; a sister-in-law, Dee Baker of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Micheal E. Baker and John H. Baker Jr.; a great-grandson, Jordon L. Johnson; a son-in-law, Kevin L. Shaull; and a brother, Robert C. Baker.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Dunnville Baptist Church with Pastor Marvin Martin officiating. Cremation will follow the services.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dunnville Baptist Church.
