OTTUMWA — Donald Duane Blew, 84, of 173 E. Rochester died at 2:10 a.m. September 2, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born July 7, 1929 in Ottumwa to Lemuel Evert "Jerry" and Ava Maude Skirvin Blew. He married Kathryn Dowd on December 10, 1948 in Davenport.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1947, he had attended his junior year of high school in Burlington while playing guitar at the Gateway Club. Don was self employed Floor Covering Mechanic owning and operating Don Blew Floor Covering. His true passion was his music.He was a musician's musician having played guitar in many bands throughout his career including the Ponderosa Playboys which was an area backup band for Nashville stars and the Don Blew Trio and Don Blew Quartet with his two sons. He also had taught jazz guitar at Parsons College.
He enjoyed spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren who were his world.
Surviving is his wife, Kathryn; two sons, Anthony (Mary Pat) Blew and Thomas (Debi) Blew both of Ottumwa; 5 grandchildren, Natasha, Josh, Stephanie, Justin and Todd; 5 great grandchildren, Ava, Anthony, Olivia, Alita and James; 2 adopted granddaughters, Jesse and Jenna; and a sister, Carol Joyce Jobin of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lowel Keith Blew and Paul Evert Blew.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation will start after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
