Sally Steffen

OTTUMWA — Sally Jean Steffen, 83, of 318 Bonita, died at 6:30 p.m. September 12, 2013 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

She was born July 18, 1930 in Sioux City, IA to Arlington William and Norene Maureen Gibbs Hickey. She married Kenneth J. Steffen on April 10, 1950.

Sally graduated from Spencer High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College.

She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and formerly a member of St. Mary of the Visitation.She was a member of Altar & Rosary Society.

She was active in the community her entire life, including serving as Chairman of the United Way, serving on the St. Joseph Hospital Guild andwas one of the original founders of the Pink Ball serving St. Joseph and Ottumwa Regional Hospitals. Sally was a member of multiple book clubs and a founding member of the New Century Book Club.She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, golf, swimming and traveling.Sally was a Welcome Wagon Hostess for 7 years.

She served as Wapello County Supervisor for 8 years, and a member of the Wapello County Central Committee since 1956 and Secretary for 23 years.Sally was active in the Wapello County Democratic Party, Iowa Democratic Party and the National Democratic Party and was a delegate to numerous county, district and state conventions. She hosted many candidates and field staff for national and state offices in her home since the early 60s.She served on the Ottumwa Human Rights Commission, League of Women Voters and Family Crisis Center Board and served on many boards appointed by the Governor of Iowa.

Surviving is her husband of 63 years, Ken; her children, Nancy Rahmeyer of Springfield, MO, Patricia Steffen of Springfield, MO, Theresa (Greg) Sparks of Clive, Jean (Larry) Anderson of Spencer, Anne (Gary) Smith of Glenwood, Mike (Jackie) Steffen of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Peggy Tompkins; a niece, Pam (Tim) Hickman; a nephew, Michael (Elba) Tompkins all of California.
