Virginia Barnhart

OTTUMWA — Virginia LaVelle Barnhart, 95, of Ottumwa, died at 6:55 a.m. April 24, 2013 at Ridgewood Nursing and Rebab in Ottumwa.

She was born Aug. 7, 1917 in Ottumwa to Albert and Elsie Nelson Brown.

She married Frank Barnhart on June 25, 1988.

She attended Elin Grove Country School and graduated from Agency High School in 1938.

She was a member of First Church of the Open Bible and a past member of Myrah Rebecca Lodge. Her church activities included her interest in missions both her and in other countries. She had worked for the Boy Scouts, the Navy base when it was in Ottumwa, in various families' homes and in a real estate office.

She and her mother traveled to Colorado, California, Lake Erie, Oklahoma, Ohio and Canada. They also did lots of sewing, crocheting and craft work. Virginia loved cooking, gardening and all animals.

She is survived by a stepson, Leroy (Rita) Barnhart of Edgewood; two step grandchildren; nieces and nephews; several cousins and their wives and special friends, Crystal James, Connie Miller, Roberta Abrams and Joan VanBlaricome.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and an infant sister, Ruth Jeannett.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Church of the Open Bible; the Rev. Bill Hornback and Dr. Lloyd Meitzner officiating. Burial will be in Sherman Chapel Cemetery, south of Ottumwa.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. today at Robertson-Jay Funeral Home. Family and friends will be present from 6-8 p.m. this evening. Memorials may be made to First Church of the Open Bible or to the Salvation Army.
