Mary Carter

OSKALOOSA — Mary Carter, 61, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Fremont, passed away April 28, 2013, peacefully at her home in Oskaloosa after a 10-year battle with cancer.

She was born Mary Jean Vandello on Thursday, Nov. 8, 1951, in Ottumwa, the daughter of Richard and Mary Hammond Vandello. Mary graduated from Walsh High School in Ottumwa with the class of 1970. On Sept. 23, 1972, she was united in marriage to John Carter at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ottumwa, and together they raised two wonderful children, Jason and Jill.

Mary loved flowers and decorating, but her greatest loves were God and her family, especially her children and grandchildren. Her eyes lit up every time they came around. Until recently, Mary had been employed at Mahaska Drug for many years. This was a great fit for her with her decorating skills.

Her family includes her husband, John Carter of Oskaloosa; a son, Jason (Kelly) Carter of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Jill (Chase) Mitrisin of Oskaloosa; two granddaughters, Addison and Tierney Carter; two sisters, Sue (Larry) Fortney of Omaha, Neb., and Bette (Pat) Horras of Fairfield; a brother, John (Kay) Vandello of Ottumwa; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter in infancy, Heather Carter; and a brother, Richard Vandello Jr.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa; with Reverend Jeff Belger officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oskaloosa.

Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at Bates Funeral Chapel with family present from 5 -7 p.m. and a rosary recited at 7 p.m

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
