Bea Handy

OTTUMWA — Beatrice “Bea” M. Handy, 91, of Ottumwa, died at 2:34 a.m. May 5, 2013 at Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

She was born June 19, 1921 in Hayesville to William M. and Lena Becker Tremmel.

She married Ralph T. Elder. They divorced. She married Phillip N. Hill. He preceded her in death. She married Millard Handy. They divorced.

A graduate of Sigourney High School, she was a farm wife and a CNA in Davenport, Sigourney, Bloomfield and St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa. She worked for SEIDA and did home health care in her own home.

Bea was a regular visitor at Good Samaritan, donating her handmade lap robes to the residents. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker, devoting her life to her children, grandchildren and many friends, all of whom had great respect for her. Grandma Bea was always game for anything, even at the age of 80 when she took a surprise hot air balloon ride. She loved to play cards with family and friends, mainly Pitch, Cribbage and Canasta.

A devoted Catholic, she was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Surviving are two sons, Robert “Bob” Elder of Lancaster, Mo., and Edd (Judy) Elder of Fremont; a daughter, Beth (Kenny) Cook of Bloomfield; a stepson, Merle (Janice) Handy of Martinsburg; a stepdaughter, Joan Rullman of Davenport; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Bill Elder; a grandson; a granddaughter; a brother, Bernard Tremmel; and a sister, Bernadine Tremmel.

Funeral mass will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Mitch, Chris, Jim C., Jim E., Jason Elder, Brent and Kerri Cook.

Cremation will follow services.

Inurnment will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney at a later date.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with a Christian Wake Service at 5 p.m. followed with the family present until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Serenity House, 630 North 12th St., Oskaloosa, Iowa 52577.
