OTTUMWA — Kurt William Nickel, 83, of 8442 110th Ave., died at 2:30 a.m. May 6, 2013 at Ridgewood Nursing & Rehab Center.
He was born Sept. 1, 1929 in Cedar Rapids to Hans R. and Irma Bickert Nickel. He married Shirley Mae Pilcher and they would have been married 61 years this July.
A 1947 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Kurt attended college in Wisconsin. He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Kurt worked at John Morrell & Co. until the plant closed in 1973, and then worked at John Deere Ottumwa Works until retirement.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Gideons International where he served as treasurer.
Surviving is his wife, Shirley; three sons, Kurt Nickel Jr. and Mark (Marla) Nickel, both of Ottumwa, Todd (Darci) Nickel of Agency; five grandchildren, Melissa Richards, Adam Nickel, Molly Renfrew, Aaron Genners and Samantha Nickel; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Hans H. Nickel of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Ron Barnett officiating. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Inurnment will be at a later date in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Tuesda at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 p.m. this evening.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Endowment Fund.
