OTTUMWA -- Leonard Clair Schakel, 79, of 556 Hamilton, died at 6:25 a.m. May 14, 2013 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born March 23, 1934 in Iowa to Leonard and Rose Ella Auxier Schakel. He married Dorothy Hudson on October 21, 1978 in Ottumwa.
Leonard was a graduate of Melrose High School and Indian Hills Community College. He served with the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958.
He had worked at John Deere Ottumwa Works.
Leonard was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Surviving is his wife, Dorothy; three daughters, Cheryl Carnes, Tina Patti and Christy (Bob) Stevens all of Ottumwa; two sons, David D. (Rita) Schakel of North Liberty and George D. (Becky) Schakel of Ottumwa; four step-children, Dan David (Candy) Ray of Moulton, Dennis (Patti) Ray of Tipton, Brenda Hiatt of Ottumwa and Paul (Kim) Hiatt of Plainfield, IL; 20 grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters, Vera Brooks, Wilma Colwell and Shirley (Paul) Hazelwood all of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Leonard R. “Rick” and Donald E. Schakel Sr. and a sister, Lois Derby Graham.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. The family will be present one hour prior to the service. Cremation will follow the services.
