OTTUMWA — Robert Dean Black, 68, of 13561 Copperhead Road, died June 11, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born May 15, 1945, in Davis County to Earl and Bernice McCarty Black. He married Diana Jean “Tena” Saner on June 26, 1964. She preceded him in death on May 17, 2006.
A 1963 graduate of Davis County High School, Dean farmed all of his life, raising horses and mules. He had worked for the Canteen Services and for a short time worked at John Deere Ottumwa Works. Dean worked 33 years for the Wapello County Secondary Road Department, retiring in 2000.
Dean attended Hopewell Church. He had been a member of Olive Branch Masonic Lodge #21 A.F.&A.M., Soap Creek Rebels Saddle Club and Oxbow Company. He was currently serving as a Green Township trustee, and was on the board of directors for Wapello County Soil & Water Conservation and Southern Iowa Electric.
Dean is survived by the second love of his life, Mary Ann Peterson of Albia; two daughters, Teresa Keck and Lori (Jim) Rushman, both of Ottumwa; a son, Larry (Dana) Black of Ottumwa; 10 grandchildren, Courtney Mitra, Jenna (Justin) Hunter, Kyle Keck, Josie Rushman (fiancé Lincoln Lynch) Leah Rushman, Brody, Brayden, Saydee and Emma Beck, and Gracie Black. He was also a very proud great-grandfather to Launa Mitra, Brock Hunter and soon-to-be baby Lynch. He is also survived by a brother, Jerry (Helen) Black of Bloomfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Don Black, Darrell Black, Gene Orman and a stillborn brother; and a sister, Arbitena Black.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Cary officiating. Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Friday at with the family present from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday.
