OTTUMWA — William Todd “Bill” McElroy, 82, of 1209 E. Main St., died at 4:55 a.m. August 23, 2013, at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
He was born November 24, 1930, in Dudley to Carl Todd and Leora Sophia Byrum McElroy. He married Lucille I. Fattig on March 4, 1950.
Bill was a 1949 graduate of Ottumwa High School, where he played football. He worked for 23 years at John Morrell & Co. and also worked for Swift & Co. and Farmland Foods. He was with Midwestern Advertising in St. Joseph, Mo., for the last 25 years.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and attended First Church of the Open Bible. Bill was a 20-year member of Gideons International. He sang with the Morrell Male Chorus, traveling around Iowa.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille; a daughter, Joni L. Long of Marion; two sons, Rev. Dr. John (Alaine) McElroy of Perth, W. Australia, and Chris T. (Deann) McElroy of Bussey; nine grandchildren, Leslie (Matt) Anderson of Cedar Rapids, Ashley (Nick) Rocca of Council Bluffs, Jenny (Adam) Landis of Marion, Luke Long of Cedar Rapids, Toby (Lucy) McElroy of Perth, W. Australia, Holly (Jurgen) Torgersen of Arendal, Norway, Reed, Chase and Sydney McElroy, all of Bussey; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Furlong of Miami, Fla.
Bill loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Anthony Long; four sisters, Vera Erickson, Marjorie Myers, Catherine Whitaker and Bettina Speyrer.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. John McElroy officiating.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
