OTTUMWA — Michael James Daugherty, 65, of 714 W. Fourth St., died at 10:55 a.m. July 1, 2013 at Ridgewood Nursing & Rehab Center in Ottumwa surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Feb. 8, 1948, in Ottumwa to Daniel K. and Jessie West Daugherty. He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Bard W. Martin.
Mike had deep roots in Wapello Country through his grandfather, Judge Elmer K Daugherty, whose parents were early settlers in Eldon, and through his maternal grandparents, Francis J. West and Anna Maria Elizabeth Katrina Bilterman (Maggie) West, who each emigrated to the Ottumwa area from England and Germany in the mid-1890s.
Michael, the first male to be admitted to Ottumwa Heights College (photograph), was a graduate of Ottumwa High School and Indian Hills Community College, and he subsequently studied at the University of Iowa.
For many years, Mike was an independent contractor in Iowa City. As a young man, Michael attended the First Christian Church in Ottumwa.
Surviving is his long-time soulmate, Diane Paarman of Ottumwa. Also surviving are his sister, Mary Lynne (Kenneth) Weinbeck of Chelmsford, Mass.; his brother, Jack D. (Phyllis) Daugherty of Winchester, Mass.; and his seven nieces and nephews and 13 grand-nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly.
His body has been cremated. Private services will be held with inurnment in McCormick Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
