WINDSOR HEIGHTS - Gwen Wonderlich Schiller, 88, of Windsor Heights, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 10th at the Kavanagh House on 56th in Des Moines, surrounded by her family.
Born on a farm near Ollie on November 10, 1924, Gwen was the only child of the late Glen and Nora Wonderlich. She graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College with an economics degree in 1946 and worked at Drake University in the Graduate Office until she retired in 1990.
Once retired from Drake University, she had the wonderful experience working for a number of years as a Standardized Patient at Des Moines University starting in 1996 where she learned case studies to simulate patients with physical conditions to provide medical students a realistic setting to learn and practice their clinical reasoning and examination skills.
Gwen had a great passion for life and was an inspiration to everyone who knew her! Her kindness, generosity, sense of humor and style as well as her willingness to make time for everyone, was valued by her family and many friends.
Up until a few years ago, Gwen swam daily at the Walnut Creek YMCA and was an outstanding seamstress creating great Halloween costumes for her grandchildren and Christmas tree skirts that were a work of art! She was an avid reader and Chicago Cubs Fan, loved to play Scrabble, garden and completed the daily crossword puzzle without fail.
Gwen’s memory will be cherished by her husband of 66 years, Bob; daughter, Joy (Frank Vivone) Schiller from Polk City, IA; son, Bill (Liz) Schiller and their children, Charlie (Michelle) Schiller and Max Schiller, from Ottumwa, IA; son, Jim (Anne) Schiller and their children Sam and Hailey Schiller from Happy Valley, Oregon; and son, Jeff (Vickie) Schiller from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Cpl Jonathan E. “Jon” Schiller and her parents, Glen and Nora Wonderlich. A special thanks to the doctors, nurses & other health care providers at WesleyLife, Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Kavanagh House on 56th for the compassionate care they provided to Gwen.
Her body has been cremated.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013 Reece Funeral Home with Pastor David Peterson officiating. Inurnment will be in Silent City Cemetery in Monroe at a later date.
Immediately following the memorial service, a reception will be held at the home of Bill and Liz Schiller located at 19 Birchwood Drive; Ottumwa, IA.
