Ronald Ruggles, 76, Packwood

PACKWOOD — Ronald R. Ruggles, 76 of Packwood, died March 3, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Ron was born Nov. 28, 1934, in rural Packwood to Cecil R. “Buck” and Maurietta Maye Vestal Ruggles. He graduated from Batavia High School in 1952. He married Mary Ruth Whitmore on April 13, 1952. She preceded him in death on June 6, 1994. He married Beverly Comer on Aug. 5, 2009.

He lived out west for many years. Living in California, he worked at McDonnell-Douglas. He then worked as a general foreman at Ameron in California, New Mexico and Arizona. He and Mary moved back to Iowa, and he was owner/operator of the Packwood and Brighton Stockyards for many years. He then worked at Fesler Auto Mall as a salesperson, where he retired. During his retirement, he drove a SEIDA bus for Ottumwa Transit. This was a job he greatly enjoyed.  

He was a member of the Packwood Lions and Grace Family Church. He enjoyed flying; he had earned his private pilot’s license. His other hobbies included golfing, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and horse shows.

Surviving family members include his wife, Beverly; two sons, Steven and his wife Kim of Phoenix, Ariz., Jim and his wife Debra of Ollie; two daughters, Connie Blakely and Greg Hersh of Ollie, Shelley Eckley and husband Dar of Hedrick; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Jerry (Judy) Johnson of Agency, Hank (Melanie) Johnson of Windsor, Mo., James (Marilyn) Johnson of Bloomfield, Keith (DeAnna) Johnson of Agency, Deborah Davis of Batavia and Michael (Sharon) Johnson of Norwalk; 13 stepgrandchildren and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ruth; one granddaughter, Alisha; and a sister, Gail.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Grace Family Church, west of Ollie; Pastor Dar Eckley officiating. 

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Packwood Lions or Grace Family Church.
