Ray Weeks, 75, Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — Raymond Rex Weeks, 75, of 700 W. Alta Vista Ave., died at 2:45 p.m. May 27, 2011, at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

He was born Dec. 14, 1935, in Wapello County, the son of Charles and Elma Jones Weeks. Raymond was united in marriage to Marilyn Louise Ellis in 1954, and to this union three children were born.

Raymond served two years in the U.S. Army from 1954-56. His first career was in the construction industry from 1957-71. After graduating from the Indian Hills Welding School, his second career was in the welding department at John Deere Ottumwa Works, where he retired in 2001. He was a member of UAW Local No. 74.

Even though Raymond took up the game of golf later in life, he was a natural, loved the game and became quite good at it. You could find him on the Cedar Creek Golf Course with his golfing buddies on any day it was open. Over the years, he made four holes-in-one, played in qualifying rounds on the Senior Tour, holds the low score record for the IHCC two-man best ball tournament with his buddy Duffy Peters, shot his age numerous times over the last decade and won numerous local tournaments such as the Senior State Elks tournament and the Ottumwa City Men Senior Age 60-69 tournament.

Those left to honor his memory are his children, Debi (Gary) Donegan of Tucson, Ariz., Lori Hollinger of Columbia, Mo., and Rod (Cathy) Weeks of Parker, Colo.; four grandsons; three granddaughters; four great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; a brother, Gary Weeks of Ottumwa; two sisters, Sharon (Dave) Watt of Ottumwa and Alice (Ken) Lowden of Ottumwa; many nieces and nephews.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Calvin “Jim” Weeks, Fredrick Weeks, Richard Weeks and Robert Weeks; and two sisters, Arva Weeks Rogers and Hazel Weeks Hull.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Jane Shroyer officiating. Private family burial will be at Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
