OTTUMWA — Ray Maurice Johnson, 84, formerly of 18890 Highway 34, died December 7, 2013 at The Haven in Ottumwa.
He was born December 7, 1929 in Osgood, MO to Ray M. and Maebel McCracken Johnson. He married Claire Yvonne Childs July 5, 1953. She preceded him in death on August 11, 2013.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1948, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948—1952.
Ray worked 48 years for the Milwaukee Railroad, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Blakesburg Christian Church, Ottumwa Masonic Lodge #16 A.F. & A.M., a founding member of the Ottumwa Railroad Employees Credit Union and a member of the River Community Credit Union, BLET Division 200 where he was very active and held several offices. He also had served on the Blakesburg School Board from 1966—1977 and had helped coach youth basketball.
Surviving are two daughters, Debra (Alan) Pilcher and Nancy (Doug) Mathias both of Ottumwa; a son, Dennis (Jackie) Johnson of Urbandale; nine grandchildren including Steven Johnson who was raised in the home, Eric, Brandon, April, Ashley, Kevin, Travis, Stefanie and Megan and ten great- grandchildren; a sister, Merilyn (Jack) Brazil of Sun City, CA; a brother, Melvin "Tud" (Linda) Johnson of Kearney, NE.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Becky Monohon; a sister, Betty June Helsper.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Ray Lyon officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.A Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday.
