MT. PLEASANT — Carolyn J. McLeland Bolin, 75, of rural Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Salem, died unexpectedly on Jan. 8, 2014, at the Chandler Regional Hospital in Chandler, Ariz., while wintering at her home in Chandler.
Carolyn Judell Sprouse was born Sept. 1, 1938, in Bonaparte, the daughter of Selby Clyde and Florence Reva (nee Keck) Sprouse. She graduated from Cantril High School in 1956. On Dec. 29, 1955, in Edina, Mo., Carolyn married Robert Ray “Bob” McLeland. Mr. McLeland died Jan. 24, 2006. On Nov. 9, 2006, at the Salem Friends Church, Carolyn married Dean Bolin.
For 30 years, Carolyn was a bus driver for the Mt. Pleasant Community School District. She served many terms (non-concurrent) as the city clerk for Salem. She had even served as mayor pro-tem for Salem. Earlier in her married life, she worked at Biggs Hatchery. She also raised, dressed and sold chickens from home.
Carolyn was active on the fundraising committee for the Salem Crew Public Library, the Salem Recreation Association, the Christmas lights for Salem, the Salem Old Settlers Coke Wagon and the Fun Run/Walk and the Salem Hospitality Committee for RAGRAI and the Tractor Cavalcade. She and both of her husbands took care of the grounds of the Lleweling Quaker Museum for many years.
Carolyn was an avid fisher of catfish. She was a member of the Cantril High School Softball, several softball and basketball league teams and helping her children on softball teams. She enjoyed quilting and made quilts for each of her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband Dean of Rural Mt. Pleasant; five children, Becky McLeland of Salem, Cherie (Lonnie) LeBlanc of Warrensburg, Mo., Reva (Brian) Merschman of West Point, Iowa, Rob (Dolly) McLeland of Gilbert, Ariz., and Jody (Mindy) McLeland of Salem; four stepchildren, Patsy (Fred) Kruse of Salem, Greg (Lori) Bolin of Mt. Pleasant, Melodee (Mitch) Yaley of Mt. Pleasant and Cindy (Stan) Dilks of Salem; one brother, Clyde Sprouse of Keosauqua; two sisters, Vera Sheer and Gracie (Harold) Mills, all of Salem; 29 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
