ALBIA — Doug “Vaughn Douglas” Faber, 63, of Blakesburg, passed away Jan. 26, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice in Albia.
Doug was born March 26, 1950, in Ottumwa to Vaughn B. and Patricia L. (Stevens) Faber.
Doug grew up on the family farm and graduated from Moravia High School in 1968. He went on to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1969-71. He owned and operated Faber Transportation and was very proud of farming with his father later in life.
Doug loved spending time with his family, especially while preparing for a hay ride held every fall for the Faber side of his family. He was also very proud of his granddaughters’ achievements. His favorite pasttime was giving his granddaughters, nieces and nephews Gator rides.
Doug is survived by his parents; his daughter, Angela (Phil) Irwin; and son, Jason Faber; granddaughters Chloe and Ava Irwin; sister Diann (Glen) Richmond; sister Cathy (Larry) McCarty; sister Carolyn (Gene) Hunter; brother Dennis (Sandi) Faber; sister Cheryl (Jack Jr.) Martin; sister Cindy (Tom) Shepherd; sister Becky (John) Engle; sister Trish Tarbell; and sister Lisa (Ross) Boley; 25 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Fred and Bernice Stevens; his paternal grandparents, Richard and Inez Faber; a son, Alex; a nephew, Jack Mayfield Martin III; and a brother-in-law, Roy Tarbell.
A private family memorial service will be at a later date at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia with Doug’s family present from 6-8 p.m. A celebration of life will be 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Welcome Home Soldier Memorial and/or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
