Thelma Clausen

HIGHLAND CENTER — Thelma Grace Clausen, 92, went home to her Heavenly Father on Jan. 16, 2014, in Fredericksburg, Texas, where she had resided since 1998.

Thelma was born on Dec. 18, 1921, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Ellis and Sarah Jane (Bonnell) Gibson. During World War II she was employed as a stenographer for the war department in Washington, D.C., where she met her future husband, Robert “Bob” E. Clausen of Iowa. They married on Dec. 24, 1943, in Bryan, Texas, and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2008. Bob preceded her in death on April 12, 2009.

Thelma and Bob spent the early years of their married life in Iowa, where their three children were born and raised. Thelma worked as a secretary at Chamberlain Manufacturing Corp. from 1955-68. In 1967, they moved to Stillman Valley, Ill., and both Bob and Thelma were employed by Sundstrand Corp in Rockford, Ill. Two years later in 1969, they purchased a 40-acre tract of land near Byron, Ill., and began clearing it for their future home, moving in May of 1972 onto the newly established Black Walnut Farm, where they raised quarter horses. Following Bob’s retirement in 1986, they sold the farm and commenced traveling across the United States before moving to Harlingen, Texas, and finally settling in Fredericksburg, Texas, in 1998.

Thelma's hobbies included researching her family tree, working in her flower garden and traveling. She was a woman after God's own heart and loved each of us unconditionally. Leaving us with beautiful memories, she will live on through those lives she touched. Another angel has found her wings.

Thelma is survived by her three children, James “Jim” Clausen and wife Sue of Leon, Iowa, Christine “Tina” Clausen Bernstein of Fredericksburg, Texas, and William “Bill” E. Clausen and Debbie of Weatherford, Texas; six grandchildren; and her sister, Betty Gibson Crawford of Michigan.

A memorial service was held Jan. 17 in Fredericksburg with interment of ashes to follow at a later date in the McCormick Cemetery, Highland Center, Iowa.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schaetter Funeral Home, Fredericksburg, Texas.
