---- — CENTERVILLE — Sister Marilyn Reyes, CHM, 94, died Jan. 28, 2014, at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston.

The daughter of Victoriano Reyes and Mariana Vargas, Juanita Pauline Reyes was born in Centerville in 1919. She entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary, Ottumwa, in 1936 and professed vows in 1939.

She completed a B.A. in elementary education at Marycrest College, Davenport. For more than 25 years she taught primary grades in the Diocese of Davenport at St. Mary and St. Patrick in Ottumwa, St. Mary in Centerville and St. Alphonsus in Davenport, as well as outside the diocese in Des Moines and cities in Illinois and Montana.

Following completion of her M.A. in intercultural education from the University of the Americas, Cholula, Puebla, Mexico, in 1978, she began a ministry in bilingual religious education with emphasis on Spanish-speaking persons. This ministry continued formally and informally for the rest of her life. In addition, course work in religious studies at Mundelein College prepared her for pastoral ministry in California, Arizona, Illinois, Kansas and Texas. She retired to the Humility of Mary Center, Davenport, in 1992, where she remained a volunteer or participant in many activities in the Quad Cities. Among these were Gilda’s Club, Friendly House, Center for Active Seniors, Inc., and the Iowa Democratic Party. Several months ago she moved to Bishop Drumm Care Center.

Of nine siblings, only her brother Victor Reyes of Rock Island, Ill., survives. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and the Sisters and Associates of her religious community.

Services at Bishop Drumm Our Lady of Peace Chapel were Jan. 29. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Church, 516 Fillmore St., Davenport, followed by luncheon in the Church Hall.

Davenport visitation is Thursday at Humility of Mary Center, Magnificat Chapel, 820 W. Central Park with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 828 S. 18th St., Centerville, followed by burial at Oakland Cemetery and then a luncheon at the church.

Centerville visitation will be from 10-11:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
