William Carter, 82, Stockport

STOCKPORT — William C. Carter, 82, of rural Stockport, died at 7:06 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

He was born on May 15, 1930, near Stockport to Allen Bruce and Alice Maree Teeter Carter and married Neva Elaine Stecker on June 1, 1952 in Harrisburg Baptist Church north of Bonaparte. They celebrated their 60th anniversary with an open house at Stockport Legion Hall.

Bill graduated from Stockport High School in 1947, where he was active in sports, and he spent his life farming in the Stockport community. He was an active member and deacon in Harrisburg Baptist Church, served on the Van Buren Community School board, including several years as president, was a director of State Central Bank and had served in the Iowa Army National Guard.

He had been active in several agricultural associations, piloted his own airplane, and enjoyed boating, water skiing, motorcycling, polka music and playing cards with family and friends. He had a great sense of humor and was known to those close to him as the “Big Teaser.”

Surviving are his wife, Neva; a daughter, Marsha (Steve) Appleman of Keosauqua; three sons, Michael (Trena) Carter of Columbus, Ind., Merrill (Susan) Carter of Greer, S.C., and Mark (Shelley) Carter of Stockport; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Carter of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Richard Carter of Indianola; two sisters, Ramona (Eugene) Clark of Stockport, and Barbara Carter of Iowa City; a sister-in-law, Irma Elliott of Bonaparte; and three brothers-in-law, Robert (Jean) Brombaugh and Dean Stecker, both of Mt. Pleasant, and Gilbert (Merial) Stecker of Keosauqua; and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, John and Nellie Stecker; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Stecker, Rhea Brombaugh and Fern Stecker; and two brothers-in-law, Lester Stecker and Phil Elliott.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Harrisburg Baptist Church; with Pastor Mark Caston officiating. Burial will be in Vale Cemetery near the church.

Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua with family present from 5–7 p.m.

Memorials to Harrisburg Baptist Church or Van Buren County Hospital Cardio Pulmonary Rehab Unit may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 28422 Hwy. 16, Stockport, Iowa 52651.
